Proverbs 23:17 NIV

“Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.”

I listened to a group of men the other day sitting at a table next to mine. I know I shouldn’t have been eavesdropping so let’s say I was doing research. They were discussing someone they all knew who just left his fourth marriage but seemed to be accumulating wealth and girlfriends as rapidly as he ever had. They shook their heads and chuckled in admiration and a little envy. I was saddened. I was sad for the man they were discussing as well as those who were admiring him. This verse is another one of Solomons contrasts. He cautions us against envying and wanting the life of a sinner. Their sin which looks to bring such great pleasure ends in broken hearts, lives and relationships. There is literally no good outcome from their sin. God knows the pain and emptiness they will deal with and, as any good parent, longs for them and us to avoid that outcome. Instead he wants us to see the power and freedom in living with devotion and deep respect for His truth. Today live pursuing Him. #BeTheEdge
