“Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?”

In a few days one of the biggest football rivalry games will take place. Occasionally before and during but very often after the game I will read of some very stupid decisions. At times these are physical confrontations some even involving guns and knives. And yes, over a football rivalry. I actually enjoy the rivalry. The jokes get pretty creative, the memes can also be hilarious which ever side you are on. The ones who take it to the foolish, at times dangerous, extremes often involved over indulging in alcohol. Those are the ones this verse is talking about. It’s certainly not limited to football games. An ER doctor once told me that over 80% of what she deals with on the weekend involve the overuse of alcohol. Re-read that. Not the use, the over use. Anything done or ingested to excess is not good for us. Even exercise. Moderation is basically how we were built. Solomon is most definitely talking about wine in this passage and we would do well to take it to heart. Football season, holiday season all have a spike in drunk driving, abuse and other alcohol fueled grief. But, in living life to its fullest we live in moderation. Today govern all your behavior so that the best view of Jesus in you comes through. #BeTheEdge

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13 NIV
