Proverbs 23:4 NIV

“Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness.”

Right out front I want you to know it’s ok to get rich. Solomon is saying not to wear yourself out pursuing money and stuff. Want to get weary chasing money and trusting your own “cleverness”? Clearly Solomon says it’s a bad idea. The practical truth of this verse goes well beyond money. Anything we chase after that does not conform to God’s call and plan on our life with not only wear us out, it will break us apart. Want to know why a popular, wealthy, Oscar winning movie star embarrasses himself and his family before an international television audience? Want to know why another one who is wealthy beyond most of our imaginings sues his ex-wife for $50 million? Want to know why a wealthy real estate mogul kills his girlfriend, chops her up and then kills his wife? The pursuit of wealth for wealth’s sake can lead us at times to believe we are above the rules and more cleaver than anyone else. God uniquely gifts each of us and calls us not only to a career and unique circumstances and opportunities, He also intends our wealth and strategies to serve Him. I will go so far as to tell you it is intended to serve Him alone. Any deviation from that plan spells impending disaster. Thankfully He loves to redeem our poor choices to His glory. Today trust His wisdom and be satisfied with His provision. #BeTheEdge
