Proverbs 23:8 NIV

“You will vomit up the little you have eaten and will have wasted your compliments.”

There will be circumstances in life where people or a person may feel obligated to include you in something. It may be an event that you would really enjoy being a part of. You may find out when you attend that the person inviting you felt obliged. They didn’t really want to invite you and if given the freedom they would not have. That is basically a picture of what Solomon is referring to in this verse. This person is dining with someone who he discovers resents his presence. Obviously the food looses some of its flavor as you chew it. The pleasure of the fine meal is gone. These assumptions assume you are a normal person. There are also those who don’t care if their presence is desired. They will enjoy themselves just the same. This Proverb is more about the host than the guest but it is an important truth for both.‬ Last month we sufficiently chastised the uncheerful giver. This month we remind the receiver to be aware of their host and that they are wasting their less than sincere compliments. Both people in this story would be better served to go have a hamburger on their own and reflect on how their relationships can better represent a Christlike presence. And remember, you are invited to a feast with your King that will be spectacular and your presence is desperately desired. Today don’t weary yourself chasing the “important” people and rest in those who love you as you are.. #BeTheEdge

“Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good…” Titus‬ ‭1:8‬a NIV‬
