Proverbs 24:22 NIV

“for those two will send sudden destruction on them, and who knows what calamities they can bring?”

This is about obedience when you, at times, don’t really want to or even think you should have to. The subjects of this verse come from the previous verse, which talk about the Lord and the king. Not obeying the Lord very obviously is not obeying the Commandment to love, the Lord, our God, with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Not obeying the king also flies in the face of Paul telling us to be the king and the government that God has appointed. At times we like to argue that an unjust government is not God appointed. As much as we’d like to believe that’s true we know that even though His purpose might be hard to understand we certainly don’t want to get caught in the discussion that God is not able to bring down any government he wants. The more important point here is to recognize the need to obey the Lord and those who He placed in authority in our lives. The frightening part of this verse is to realize disobedience leads to sudden calamity. The Hebrew reference is a picture of lightning striking. I’m not sure there is a more powerful picture of the sudden destruction of some thing or someone than the stories and videos of lightning striking out of nowhere. We walk in obedience to God with a sense of security and peace or we don’t and live with a justified sense of anxious anticipation of what will eventually happen to us. I choose walking in peace and calm and security. Today obey God and those He has placed in that role in our lives and walk in peace. #BeTheEdge
