Proverbs 24:8 NIV

“Whoever plots evil will be known as a schemer.”

There is a tendency to see the word schemer as harmless or even a little fun at times. In this use Solomon gives it no such meaning. He is literally calling this person “the Lord of mischief” and evil. I occasionally have lunch with a couple guys. At times a name comes up and I hear about this persons latest “scheme‘. It is often successful but seldom but seldom mentioned in a complimentary way. There is a good deal of head shaking and bewilderment not only at the persons audacity but also at others gullibility. Typically the person gets away with what they are doing, benefit financially and enjoy the process. I’m amazed. However this is exactly who Solomon is referring to and he is not being complimentary either. In this verse the person is considered a purveyor of evil and one who prides themself on their devious plans. Here is the point for us – don’t admire or join them. There is a temptation to participate in one of their schemes because they do tend to payoff financially. At least in the short term. I once had a friend tell me if you want to make money it’s not hard, just sell liquor and porn. His point clearly being that if you are immoral, evil and don’t care about others it is easy to exploit people for personal gain. Solomon makes it clear we all know those people. Today stay clear of them but when your paths cross be careful and let the light of Christ shine. #BeTheEdge
