“Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.”
I just spent a day with a friend who believes all of us have addiction issues. Maybe not with drugs, alcohol, pornography, or many of the other common addictions we regularly hear about, but addictions nonetheless. Solomon reminds us that when we do not practice self-control, we are in danger and at risk. Addiction may be a step beyond a lack of self-control, but there is no doubt that our boundaries—and our ability to be used by God—are sacrificed when self-control is absent. The walls can be broken down by enemy fire, but in this instance, Solomon reminds us that the walls of protection in our journey with Christ are more often broken down by allowing small compromises or by flirting with sin, which begins to erode the walls and protections God has built for us. This can happen when something that feels safe and harmless—what we might consider a gentle compromise of our values and beliefs—turns into genuine disobedience to the boundaries God has placed in His children’s lives. These boundaries are often seen as restrictive and invasive when, in truth, they are a gift and a promise of protection and genuine freedom in Christ. Today, walk in obedience. #BeTheEdge
“We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” Hebrews 2:1 NIV
