Proverbs 25:28 NIV

“Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.”

The writers at ‘Let God Be True’ put it this way, “Your success depends on ruling your spirit. Great men rule their spirits. They resist temptations to react or overreact. They restrain their emotions and manage them for good.” Self Control is one of the 9 fruits of the Soirit. Pastor Bill Muir makes the theological case that the other eight are based on having that one right. The Bible mentions self control 174 times and numerous similar words as well. It is obvious that it is very important to God that His followers both understand and practice self control. I’m not a fan. When I eat a bowl of ice cream I always want more. When it’s time to exercise I’d rather have a snack and watch some tv. This list can go on and on. It’s interesting how much of it contains eating and I’m not talking about fruits and vegetables. Thankfully I learned at an early age that self control was a key ingredient to greater success in life. When I came to Christ I learned it was the key to growth and fulfillment as a follower of God. In this verse Solomon talks about the destruction in a life lacking self control. Families flounder because of a lack of self control. Marriages fail because of that lack as well. Careers crumble for the same reason. Health is wasted when we cannot govern our appetites. Today be strong and practice the gift of self control. #BeTheEdge
