Proverbs 28:24 NIV

“Whoever robs their father or mother and says, “It’s not wrong,” is partner to one who destroys.”

This person believes that since they would eventually inherit their parents money and possessions it’s ok to take it while they are still alive. It shows the slippery slope of rationalization. Perhaps they would have eventually taken possession of whatever they stole but it is still stealing. The writer here makes the point that they were most likely in the company of true robbers and criminals when making their decision to take what was not theirs. In the process they became just like the robbers and thieves. Scripture makes it clear that we become like those we choose to be around. Paul plainly states that corrupt company corrupts good people. It is impossible not to take on the characteristics, thought patterns and behavior of those we immerse our lives with. We definitely need to be around and even build friendships and have relationships with those who don’t know Christ but to constantly live in their influence is dangerous. As we enter a new year it may be worth evaluating who we spend most of our time with and ask ourselves is their impact in our story is drawing us closer to Christ or pushing us further from Him. Today spend time in the company of God’s people. #BeTheEdge
