I live in a small town. When I moved here over 40 years ago, it was considerably smaller. But even as it has grown, so has the church community. It has a major university known for its conservative values, but more importantly, it has a huge Christian population that is involved weekly in campus ministries. As a youth movement for Christ, especially among young men, sweeps across our nation and even around the world, our community is seeing the same thing occur. It is fascinating and exciting. It’s not happening everywhere, but it certainly is here. On the other side of things, as the leader of The Edge ministry, which works with business leaders, I have the privilege of watching Christian men and women lead their companies from a biblical worldview. That is amazing and exciting to see. Almost every visitor I’ve had in town, whether they’ve spoken at an event or been here for some other reason, has made the comment before they leave that this area is different. The difference they speak to is that it is friendlier and also seems to embrace the things of God more closely and yet more broadly. Because I’ve lived here for so many years, I don’t believe I’ve noticed it quite the way they do. It is unique in the faith of its leadership, both politically, academically, and in business. There are plenty of people who don’t serve God in those roles, but percentage-wise, I believe there is a larger group here than in most communities around the country.
