Proverbs 29:8 NIV

“Mockers stir up a city, but the wise turn away anger.” Proverbs 29:8 NIV

I’m not a great world traveler. However, I’ve been to many different cities in my six decades of life. I have noticed that certain cities have a certain feel to them. It’s almost a spiritual sense. Over time I have picked up on how often the type of leadership in those communities tends to be reflected in their community’s attitudes. G. Campbell Morgan said that this verse from Proverbs is “A fine motto for engraving on the walls of the Foreign Office of any nation.” I agree. Today we are watching different communities respond in very different ways to the challenges we all face. It would be easy to lay the responsibility for a community’s spirit on its leaders and collectively on its population. No doubt it is to an extent. The thing that is missed in that assertion is that both groups are made up of individuals. You see, we as individuals must live in intimate connection with our Savior. No follower of Jesus would be seen as a ‘mocker’. Mockers act like other people and the ideas they hold are ‘stupid’ – that behavior is devaluing. God’s people treat others with respect, understanding that they are created in the image of our Father. Whether we agree or disagree, respect is always our go-to response, and peace is the result. Today, respect those you differ with and allow God’s presence to spread into your community. #BeTheEdge
