There is a centuries long conversation about who Agur was. Whether he was a real person who appears as another wise man, and only in this chapter of scripture, or was it a name given, for some obscure reason, to Solomon. I have my view, but today I’d rather reflect on the uselessness of how “(the) vain speculate where God is silent, knowing that it is much better to give our full attention to the teaching than to indulge in unprofitable speculation about the writers.” (Bridges) I am amazed at the strong opinions that at times tip over into argument and judgement over issues that God obviously did not consider relevant enough to eternal truth to address in His Word. The list runs the gambit from sports to even some deep issues He saves to answer in eternity. There are books and articles written on the unanswered questions of The Buddha, Muhammed, and every other religious figure who ever lived. Most of those questions, if looked at through the lens of our Bible, are clearly answered by God through His Son and His Word. If we spent our energy discovering His revealed Truth, we would stay busy every moment of every day. To get caught up in meaningless arguments about the things God was not bothered to address can be entertaining, as long as it’s done with respect and for fun. This can certainly include politics. When it evolves into dogmatic statements of truth as though “God says so!” we’d better be sure God really says so. Today, pursue those things that matter to God and relax and enjoy, or else ignore, the things that don’t. #BeTheEdge
