“I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.” Proverbs 4:11 NIV
Walk a little slower, Dad, ‘cos I am only small.
I’m following in your footsteps, and I don’t want to fall.
Someday when I’m all grown up, you’re what I want to be;
Then I will have a little child, who’ll want to follow me.
And I would want to lead just right and know that I was true.
So, walk a little slower, Dad, for I must follow you.”
John Walter Bratton
This is a ‘generational’ Proverb by Solomon. It talks at certain points about what he learned from his father and in others what his son learned from him. It is a vivid reminder that there is almost always someone watching and learning from us. It is also seen in the immorality of Solomon passed on from his father, David. However, there is much wisdom and God-knowledge that David passed along to his son, as well. We all will impact the lives, for better or worse, that come after us. It may be employees, neighbors, or friends, but it will always be seen in our children. I have a good friend who grew up in a pretty dysfunctional home. He once commented that his parenting strategy was to do the opposite of everything his parents did. Sad to say, that might have been a relatively successful plan. Whoever is watching, let’s live in such a way that we can one day say what Solomon said in this verse. Today, lead in wisdom and along straight paths. #BeTheEdge
