Proverbs 4:14 NIV

“Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers.”

First thing I noticed in this verse is that Solomon is not making a suggestion. He starts with “Do not…”. My kids can tell you that when their mom started an instruction that way it was instantly a non negotiable. It left no room for doubt. Whatever they might want different from her command was off the table. Solomon does the same thing. Stay completely away from the way evil people choose to go. Wonder if something is a good idea? Look at who else is doing it. Hanging in bars, going to the track these are pretty obvious bad ideas. Less obvious habits and practices are the ones you can discern by who does them. Jennifer had a little saying for our kids.  “When in doubt, don’t”. I carried that into my ministry with teens. When we are young in the faith we need guard rails to help guide us while we develop the ability to hear and discern the voice of God in our life. On our refrigerator we keep the verse Paul sent the Corinthians reminding them that Solomons point in this verse is not a suggestion about a possibility. It is a guarantee that the wise person wants no part of. As God has called you to create environments for safety, health and positive growth at home, work and in your community limiting the influence of “evildoers” is paramount. Today be aware of your influence and influences and allow God’s presence to define your life. #BeTheEdge
