Proverbs 7:5 NIV

“They will keep you from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words.”

Solomon speaks to this issue of men falling into the trap of sexual sin with adulterous women very often throughout Proverbs. He knew it was an issue then and would be still today. Just as importantly he knew God’s truth and wisdom was the only way to find victory over temptation. The other thing Solomon was dealing with was the rise of immorality at a time when peace and prosperity was flowing throughout his empire. With time, resources and opportunity more available than earlier in the Kingdom of Israel the people drifted into immorality. I’m not so sure that the crazy immorality of our time is not a result of the same. Certainly not everyone in our country have that level of prosperity but on a world scale we have it pretty well in the US. It was actually in the early 40’s that teenagers emerged. The term cannot be found prior to 1939. We created a leisure class and they were kids. As soldiers returned from WWII looking for jobs a law was passed that teenagers could not be hired to work. It was the first time more teens were in High School than in the workforce in the history of the world. It was the first of a number of times we created or expanded a leisure class. A law has been proposed in California (where else right?) to require a 32 hour 4 day work week that paid employees for 40 hours of work. We are looking, as a culture, for ways to avoid hard work and pursue pleasure. Today work hard for the Lord and God will reward your leisure time. #BeTheEdge
