“Do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings.”
I went to the gym this morning. Besides just needing to say that to brag a little bit, I did think about it when I read this verse. You see, I spent about 25 minutes at the gym and hated every minute of it, but when I’m done, I need about a three-hour nap. In this verse, Solomon talks specifically about wasting your strength on things that not only don’t matter but will actually destroy the important institutions, organizations, structures, and lives of which you are a part. Certain choices will undermine what we are called to be here for. Our impact for the Kingdom is put at risk when we invest our strength and energy in things that are unproductive. That does not mean time at the gym or enjoying recreational activities is wrong. Often, those things help equip and prepare us to be more effective in the Kingdom. Instead, Solomon is warning against relationships and activities that pull us away from what we were designed for—things that lead to negative outcomes and, ultimately, destruction. Joining forces with those who share a mission to impact the world for Christ brings strength and power to our efforts. It is true that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts when we are united in the cause of Christ. Today, invest your life and your strength in people who will partner with you for greater impact in the world. #BeTheEdge
