Proverbs 1:1 NIV

“The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:”

If you google “self promotion” or “building your brand” you will discover no shortage of books, podcasts and conferences offering to help you get better at it. In politics it is a given that you need to learn to promote and advertise yourself better than anyone else can. I don’t know about you but all this makes me very uncomfortable. We use to call these practices “bragging.” Solomon begins the Book of Proverbs by telling us why he is sharing them. Thankfully his purpose has nothing to do with building his reputation or focusing the spotlight on himself. His goal so to benefit everyone in his day and beyond. Ultimately it was to share wisdom and instruction that makes the king unnecessary. He wants us to read, learn and then to successfully manage our life. Since when do we see the goal of our leaders being to make them unnecessary? Not often. If we know wisdom, if we can discern between truth and lie, if we know how to act wisely we become very capable of contributing to the Ives of those around us without the need of someone to impose those things on us. What an amazing world where we would all practiced self control and humility. Today as we start our journey through another month in Proverbs lets make it a goal to learn to live a life of love, kindness and service for others. #BeTheEdge
