“If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul;” Proverbs 1:11 NIV

The sense of belonging can be one of the most powerful forces in the human experience. There are numerous examples, both good and bad, of what a person will do to feel like they belong to a group. The invitation to be a part of a group or movement at times is as much about the invite as it is the group or activity itself. Loneliness can be suffocating. That is understandable, as we realize that we were not created to be alone. As a five-year-old, I memorized a poem that illustrates this which started with the line, “God stepped out on Earth and He looked around and said, ‘I’m lonely. I’ll make me a man.’ It was a variation of “The Creation” by James Weldon Johnson. The idea was that God created Adam and Eve to accompany Him throughout eternity. I have watched many individuals over the years become part of various groups or ‘crowds’ just because of this longing to belong. Many compromised on firmly held beliefs and values. These days we have seen people on the news get caught up in protests and rallies that turned dangerous and destructive, to later claim they got involved peacefully and were caught up in the crowd’s transition to aggressive action. God offers all of us the opportunity to belong to His family. It is a powerful, eternal, peaceful family. Today, choose to hang with Him and His people and invite those looking for a place to belong to join with you. #BeTheEdge

“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household,” Ephesians 2:19 NIV
