Proverbs 11:13 NIV

“A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.”‬‬

If the National Enquirer was a person they would be this verse. Well, not exactly but kind of. The actual word for gossip in this verse is tale-bearer. That is a person who “trades” in scandal and secrets. There is a human condition that makes a lot of people want to show they are “in the know”.  They like to have the inside scoop. It is a dangerous person who is untrustworthy with secrets. It s not a huge leap to believe that someone who tells you another’s secrets is willing to share yours too. Conversely that person who you can discuss private issues with that you know will never share them with another is a valuable gift. We all need confidants to talk through things we are dealing with in our journey. We need to know as we process our thinking with them we are putting these intimate details in safe hands. Most of my life I have been an ordained minister and a counselor. Both of these roles come with an expectation of and a legal responsibility for confidentiality. Sometimes it can be tempting in certain conversations to share something that was passed to you in confidence. God has placed some of us strategically in the life of another at a time when they need to speak freely. Without the ability to trust someone to keep a confidence many people would suffer in silence. Today guard the conversations you are trusted with and only share them in silent prayer to your Heavenly Father. #BeTheEdge
