Proverbs 12:11 NIV

“Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.”

The very first entrepreneurs were farmers. Early in the history of mankind it was realized that rather than spend all day foraging for food it served everyone better to have a farmer meet the needs of a group and then the others could work on crafting weapons for hunting and other “products” to make life easier. Over time many products changed but in Solomons day and beyond farmers have always been critical to the survival and advancement of society. Here Solomon tells us that the contrast to this invaluable laborer is the person who chases treasure without effort. I’ve seen them. Often on pay day they are sitting at the convenience store buying and scratching off lottery tickets. They are chasing the fantasy of millions of dollars putting them on easy street while exerting hardly any effort. There is an in between group who is just as senseless. Today we know them as quiet quitters. “Quiet quitting refers to doing the minimum requirements of one’s job and putting in no more time, effort, or enthusiasm than absolutely necessary.” (Investopedia) According to a Gallup survey of workers age 18 and older taken in June 2022, quiet quitters “make up at least 50% of the U.S. workforce—probably more.” This is not how God created us. Today pursue your calling with gusto and passion or change jobs. #BeTheEdge
