Proverbs 13:11 NIV

“Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.”

“…about 70 percent of people who win a lottery or get a big windfall actually end up broke in a few years, according to the National Endowment for Financial Education.” (Cleveland.com) Ellicotte tells us that the word for dishonest in this verse literally translates “gotten by vanity, in an unsatisfactory manner,”. That certainly describes the lottery. However, this truth goes to much simpler practices as well. Solomon is also saying that wealth obtained without labour and exertion will dissipate and be gone. Again, 7 out of 10 who get millions in a lottery win find it is all gone within 5 years. It that amount, or even much less, is accumulated slowly through honest work and investment it almost always lasts longer, even generationally.   A very boring article in The National Library of Medicine entitled, “Wealth Accumulation and Factors Accounting for Success” makes a strong case that those who invest a portion of their income consistently tend to accumulate wealth over time at a rate of over 70%. I find it telling that in one example over 70% end up broke while the other has almost the same level of success. Solomon’s point is much more succinct, the lazy or dishonest pursuit of quick wealth fails. The honest, steady accumulation of resources brings longer financial success. Today work hard and save. #BeTheEdge

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” Jesus
