Proverbs 13:20 NIV

“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

The Septuagint puts it this way, “He who roams about with fools shall be known.” And, “Tell me your companions, and I will tell you what you are”. Paul says essentially the same thing to the Corinthians in the midst of letting them know that they have false teachers trying to get them to deny the resurrection. Imagine the danger that prompted both Solomon and Paul to give this caution. My wife and I kept the verse from Corinthians on our refrigerator so that our children would be reminded everyday to beware of who they allowed to speak into their lives. Both the words and example of those we let close on our journey contribute to who we become. In this verse Solomon is also pointing out the impact a society’s beliefs and actions have on a persons character development. I believe we can point to almost any time in a nations history and see this truth fleshed out, today being no exception. As followers of Jesus there is a very subtle and dangerous implication to this verse. It is critical that we are very intentional to not be distracted by all the fun and exciting elements of a church or ministry until we have examined their doctrinal commitment to the Biblical truths and their ownership of a solid biblical worldview. Anything less is very dangerous. Today examine those you allow to speak into your story. #BeTheEdge
