“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”
Approximately one in nine verses in the Book of Proverbs deals with our words. That means Solomon takes this subject very seriously. Consequently, I find it to be a regular topic in my devotions as well. I don’t know about you, but I certainly need the regular reminder of how often my mouth has either embarrassed me or gotten me into trouble. “Solomon frequently addresses the power and importance of speech and words in the Book of Proverbs. Depending on how you count them, there are over 100 verses in Proverbs that deal directly with:
• The use of the tongue
• The power of words
• Lying vs. truthfulness
• Gossip and slander
• Wise vs. foolish speech
• Listening vs. talking” (AIResearch)
Two important truths emerge:
First, we need to diligently watch what comes out of our mouths. This means pausing, counting, or doing whatever it takes to hold back and consider what we are about to say. More importantly, the mouth reveals the heart. In moments of pressure or surprise, it is almost impossible to stop words from escaping Therefore, who we are inside must be our priority. When our hearts are aligned with Christ, guarding our mouths becomes less necessary—because only good waits to respond. That’s our goal as we are conformed to the image of Jesus. Today, speak life. #BeTheEdge
“You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Jesus
