“No one can be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted.”
In this passage, we find Solomon speaking about foundations. We see Jesus doing the same in the Gospels. How effectively we walk through life will, to a large extent, be determined by the foundation on which we’ve built our lives. Ultimately, how we end our life on this planet—and begin our life beyond—depends entirely on what that foundation is. To state the obvious, foundations built on money, power, success (however we define it), influence, or even service will never truly carry us through the storms of life or into the heaven of eternity. These can all be byproducts of the foundation we build on, but none of them offer a lasting or firm foundation in the face of tragedy and trial. Here’s the really good news: neither Solomon nor Jesus is telling us to settle for less than the things on that list or others, but rather they are offering us so much more. It’s tempting to believe that money, prestige, and all the things the world deems important are worth pursuing and wrapping our identity and self-worth around. But when we recognize that we are a unique, supernatural creation of the eternal Creator—who desires a relationship with us as the foundation of everything in our journey now and our future—we begin to realize that this is what we most deeply long for. I’ve always loved, and you’ve probably heard me quote, C.S. Lewis on our longings and where they point. He wrote, “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” Politics, causes, sports, money, or fame—they can’t fill that desire. That’s your soul longing for eternity. Today, find your source and foundation in Jesus. #BeTheEdge
