Proverbs 17:10 NIV

“A rebuke impresses a discerning person more than a hundred lashes a fool.”

I will confess that a well-placed and well-executed rebuke can certainly impress me—particularly when it’s not directed at me. However, we know Solomon is talking about how we receive a rebuke. In the Hebrew, this verse emphasizes that even a gentle rebuke makes an immediate impact on a wise person and is more effective than a hundred lashes to the unwise. A wise person appreciates correction, responds quickly, and becomes more Christlike as a result. Our fallen nature resists rebuke and correction, but the Holy Spirit within us affirms when we are being taught. Our fallen nature is defensive instantly to anything that may imply we are less than we want people to believe we are. We live among people who work hard every day to present a false front of perfection. The wise follower of Christ realizes nobody is perfect other than Jesus Himself. Our lack of perfection should open us to receiving, quickly and graciously, words of truth that will help carve us into the image of Jesus. That is His commitment, and that should be our goal. God knew who would choose Him, and He has predetermined that they will be conformed to the image of Jesus. We will be conformed either willingly, gently, and in response to His rebuke, or we will be conformed by being dragged there kicking and screaming. The commitment to conform us to the image of Jesus is not ours—it’s God’s. And He can and will do what He has committed to do. Today, receive rebuke with grace and be conformed to the image of Jesus. #BeTheEdge

“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” Romans 8:29 NIV
