Proverbs 17:25 NIV

“A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the mother who bore him.”

This verse is basically repeated 5 times throughout Proverbs. Obviously this issue concerned and bothered Solomon as well as God. I can’t think of a much deeper, gnawing sadness and ache than that which a parent experiences when a child wounds their heart through their actions. No one hurts a parent like a child. The word grief also translates as anger. More tellingly the word translated bitterness appears nowhere else. It singularly shows a deep, painful, Spirit poising effect on the one who gave life to this person. Regardless of a person’s belief about their own behavior, causing this level of pain to their parents should be all that is needed to avoid that action. After years in youth ministry I have become extremely sensitive to the reality that everyone is someone’s son or daughter. When tempted to get caught up in the belief that a person deserves what they bring on themselves I am still cognizant that there is a mom or dad, usually both, who will hurt because of their child’s pain. Jesus exhibited a special tenderness for parents of hurting children. So should we. Today be aware of the pain children cause their parents and that God, as our Father, experiences pain and sadness when we behave in ways He did not design us too. #BeTheEdge

“Do we not all have one Father? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another?” Malachi‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬
