Proverbs 17:27 NIV

“The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.”

I use to think it was kind of a sissy thing to refer to a man as sweet. Maybe it still is. The word here used by Solomon is more a precious, excellent spirit. The other interpretation is a cool spirit, pleasant to others. You choose the word but after years of being around all kinds of people I’m now drawn to the type Solomon refers to here. And this is the bonus, not only do they have this pleasant spirit but they also have a gracious tongue. They not only know when to keep quiet, when they do talk they speak with beautiful, gracious, even sweet deliberately chosen words. I don’t know about you but I see places where loud, boisterous people are welcome. Maybe even celebrated. All I can say is that in the midst of our noisy and nosey world it is refreshment to the soul when that grace filled, gentle spirit sneaks and speaks into my story. I’m not saying loud celebration or even aggressive exuberance is not appropriate at times. Let’s say when Auburn bests Alsbama in the Iron Bowl. But again, as life moves forward the loud celebration is less appreciated then the gentle, calming exchange of truth and the eternal. Today let’s look for opportunities to be the settling, even sweet, voice of knowledge and understanding, like a cool gentle breeze in the heat of the day. #BeTheEdge
