“The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, but as for a broken spirit who can bear it?” Proverbs 18:14 NASB

A headline in yesterday’s USA Today said “’It’s been one thing after another’: Americans are unhappiest they’ve been in 50 years, poll shows.” The survey actually gives a good look at where the average American looks for happiness and where they turn when it is taken away.  The perception that is often missed is how happiness stacks up against the biblical reality of Joy. As believers, we are promised joy in all circumstances as a gift from the indwelling Holy Spirit. The difference between earthly happiness and God’s joy has, among other things, been described as: “Happiness merely pleases a person, while joy warms the person’s heart. Happiness mostly comes from outside things, as it is gained by observing or doing a particular thing. On the other hand, joy lies within a person.” So, our journey is to find the Joy of the Lord that remains through the good and challenging times we encounter in our journey. It helps to understand that there will never be a time when something will not threaten your happiness and be out to steal your joy. It is guaranteed that at times the world will steal your happiness. The great news is that God provides and guarantees Joy. Today, find your joy in God’s sovereign love and power. #BeTheEdge
