“Casting the lot settles disputes and keeps strong opponents apart.”
If you are a gambler you could initially find great comfort in this verse. In Solomon’s day if every possible solution had been tried to settle a difference and both parties agreed to abide by the outcome they would cast lots. Dice would be a comparison today. We don’t do this and shouldn’t. Solomon’s point was about the search for a solution to bring peace and end contentions between people. In many circumstances the Christ follower should consider allowing themselves to be taken advantage of and walk away from a quarrel. However that is not always the right solution either. The basis for casting the lot was that it was only done following solemn prayer and trusting God for the results. Today we have God’s word as our guide on many issues we face. We also know that God, through His Holy Spirit, both convicts and gives peace in response to fervent prayer about solutions to resolve a dispute. This verse spoke specifically to rulers and wealthy individuals in that day. They were the most likely to do real damage to themselves and others in a dispute. The belief God would settle issues where everything else had been tried was actually an act of faith. We have that same assurance from God as we seek Him and His answer. Today look to God in difficult times and trust in His answers. #BeTheEdge
