Making a vow or commitment and discovering that we did not consider the full degree of cost, time, resources, reputation and everything else, is a very difficult place to find ourselves. When we do this we have essentially three options. 1. We keep our vow and do the very best we can to fulfill it. 2. We keep the vow but do a sloppy job just to get it over with. 3. We break the vow. Solomon is making the case to first count the cost of any commitment we are thinking of making. The ultimate commitment we make costs us nothing but also costs us everything. I know that was confusing. Salvation and an eternal relationship with our creator God is a free gift. We pay nothing and do nothing to receive it. However, when we enter that relationship we turn over, or we begin the process of turning over, everything to Him. Jesus says that to be His follower means we take up His cross daily. That is a pretty costly image. Thankfully a lack of performance perfection does not disqualify us from this eternal gift. Keeping this vow should come with considering the level of commitment He calls us to though. Ultimately it is not our ability to keep it but His ability to hold onto us that makes the vow matter.
