Proverbs 2:20 NIV

“Thus you will walk in the ways of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous.”

The Thursday of Holy Week is known for a number of things. Two of the most important are the Last Supper and all that occurred there—including the inaugural Communion celebration—and the powerful lesson of what it means to be a servant as a follower of Christ. For the Lord Himself to wash the feet of the disciples at the Last Supper is one of the most profound illustrations of humility and servanthood in all of human history. Following Jesus’ lead is the best way to do what Solomon talks about here: to walk as those who are His followers and to remain on the righteous path. Jesus’ example is deep theologically, yet very understandable as well. It is not difficult to grasp what washing the feet of another looks like. It may literally mean washing someone’s feet, but more often, it is humbling ourselves to do for another what we are not required to do and what we do not owe them. However, if the model of Jesus is how we should live, then it is not difficult to make the decision to serve in ways the world may view as embarrassing. There is no doubt that a Jew of Jesus’ day would have believed what He did was beneath Him. Yet we are called to embrace that same model—that nothing is beneath us when it comes to serving another. Today, serve others the way Jesus did. #BeTheEdge

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” — Galatians 5:13 NIV
