Proverbs 23:11 NIV

“for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you.”

Other versions translate “their defender is strong” as “their redeemer is mighty”. Whichever you go with it may be one of the most understated descriptions of God in the Bible. The prior verse tells us not to mess with those without a dad. Not to pick on the weak. In Solomon’s day the nearest blood relative would take up the cause of those without a father. Either because of illness or often because of battle a young person would often be left without a father. This being through no fault of their own it was necessary to protect their inherited land and other possessions as well as their person. The writer lets the hearer and reader know very clearly that God has these fatherless kids backs. In the New Testament we are directed to look after the widows and orphans amongst others. You see God has their back also but like almost everything else in His kingdom He chooses to work through His people. He depends on us to be His hands and feet in meeting the needs of the hurting and less fortunate. It is a particularly relevant time of year for us to be aware of those in need. The hungry, cold and lonely are always with us but the celebrations of the holiday season make their pain particularly acute. As the representative of the God who protects and cares for them let’s make a special effort to protect them. Today determine a need you can meet and do it. #BeTheEdge
