Proverbs 24:11 NIV

“Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.”

One of my favorite parts of the original Thanksgiving story is how the Native Americans helped the first Pilgrims learn to feed themselves so they would survive the harsh winter. The Pilgrims landed in one of the coldest parts of our country during what was the tail end of a mini ice age. It was brutally cold. In a similar way we live in a time when many people are perishing, some physically and many, many more spiritually. We are called both here and throughout the New Testament to find ways to help them avoid the death that awaits. Our help is not always welcome but that does not preclude us from trying. Sometimes our help is rejected because it is not offered in a kind and compassionate way. Throughout history the church has been notorious for trying to force people into God’s kingdom. Whether marching entire armies through the river to “baptize” them or keeping the “alter call” going until someone relents and comes forward we have at times, as a church, been guilty of coercing people in the name of rescuing them. The most effective rescuers I’ve witnessed over the decades are those who befriend and walk beside the lost, confused and hurting, gently showing and then telling them of Jesus love. Today be thankful for your rescuer and reflect His love. #BeTheEdge

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭20‬ ‭NIV‬‬
