“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.”
This verse assumes a lot about fathers. It does not assume perfection, but it does tap into motives and purpose. Fathers should be a primary resource for their children in wisdom, counsel, instruction, and truth. They should always remember that they are being watched and that young eyes are absorbing everything and learning. I have witnessed this firsthand through my children and the thousands of teenagers I’ve worked with over the years. Everything from language to actions is often first learned by observing a father, both good and bad. A person’s initial concept of God the Father is often a reflection of what they see in their earthly father. This should prompt us to address any missing disciplines in our parenting. It is a heavy realization that, to some extent, we hold our children’s eternity in our hands. Thankfully, God works through our imperfections. My mom is 91 and forgetful, which isn’t surprising considering I’m much younger and forgetful too. When someone shares a story about her grandchildren or great-grandchildren, she often asks about it as if she’s hearing it for the first time. Repeating it with the same enthusiasm is a gift we give her out of love for her years of service and blessing to all of us. It is an act of kind respect. Today, love your parents and all those whom God has placed in positions of honor on your journey. #BeTheEdge
