“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
Notice that this verse has nothing to do with how rich, popular, or even famous someone is. A few years ago, a crossing guard at a local elementary school died in an accident. Shortly after, stories began to emerge about the impact this man’s life and constant kindness had on many children. Many of the stories involved children who were frightened or facing difficult situations at home. His kind words and actions were calming and encouraging to hundreds of children during his decades of service. When he died, his humble home was threadbare, and his cabinets were nearly empty. At his service, they couldn’t fit everyone into the church and had to set up monitors in the fellowship hall. A mother shared how, as a child, Mr. Bill had been there when she crossed through his crosswalk, tears on her cheeks, and how he spoke quiet words that calmed her soul. Her daughter also shared how Mr. Bill encouraged her one morning when her friends didn’t include her in their group. Mr. Bill’s secret was a deep wealth of scriptural knowledge that he would share in his own words at the right moments. He had a very good name and was greatly esteemed. Today, work on your name. #BeTheEdge
