Proverbs 23:7 NASB

“For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.”

I am primarily an NIV guy. However, throughout my early years as a believer I was an NASB reader. This is the version I memorized most verses in. It rarely matters which you read. After studying this verse I tend to find the NASB translates it more clearly to todays reader. The deep truth in this verse can be easily looked over if we only see it as what a person spends on guests. That is no doubt true but the much larger truth is that we are what we think. One reason Paul encourages the renewing of our minds as we grow in Christ is that he recognizes the power in this simple truth. “As a man thinks, so is he”, another translation reads. In the world of so much mental input and stimulation it is not so surprising that people often live somewhat bizarre lives, at least as far as past millennia understood. It often mirrors where they put their eyes and minds. We have heard for years that video games desensitize those who spend hours glued to screens and controllers killing and maiming characters who seem real and alive. We see adults immersed in certain news carriers and perspectives that contribute to their skewed focus, so skewed that it can be hard to climb back out to discover reality without supernatural help. People become what they think about most. Sports, recreation, work, profits and numerous other things become idols and objects of our “worship”, some to a point where we are willing to fight for and over them. Today set your mind where it belongs and let God revive and renew you focus on Him and the eternal that He died for. #BeTheEdge

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians‬ ‭3:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬
