“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—”
I used to hate naps. I always felt worse when they were over no matter how long or short they were. Now, with a little age on me, there are times that I not only enjoy one, but for the safety of everyone around me, I need one. In this verse, as in this chapter, Solomon is addressing the consistently lazy slacker. That’s an awful thing to call somebody. I’ve been learning over the last couple of years about a number of trends amongst younger employees. A pretty well known one is called quiet quitting. This is the person who does just enough at work to get by, but puts no extra effort in on behalf of the team or the company. There has always been this person but their existence greatly grew during and since Covid. I recently read an article about the youngest members of the workforce, and those who will be entering the workforce over the next few years. It revealed those who are happiest feel a sense of purpose in their job and life. They want to go to work. They believe what they do really does matter. The best way to motivate a slacker is through a sense of purpose. The greatest sense of purpose we will ever have and ever share with another is following Christ and helping grow His kingdom in the world every day. It is the cure for the lazy. It is the cure when we feel lazy. Today live with His great and powerful sense of purpose. #BeTheEdge
