“Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a ruling rightly given.”
If you have ever been wrongly accused—and even more, wrongly judged—this verse takes on a very personal meaning. And really, who hasn’t experienced this at some point in their life? Conversely, in this chapter, and specifically in this verse, Solomon reminds us what a valuable and beautiful thing it is when someone is thoughtful and kind in their speech. The picture here is one of great value and beauty—a fitting image. It lets us know that when someone is hurting, words of comfort are powerful and beautiful. When someone is struggling, words of encouragement bring kindness and peace. It also reflects the truth that when someone is not living up to their potential, words of challenge and even correction can be fitting and powerful at that moment in their story. It is about knowing the state of one’s situation and seeking the words to meet them at their point of need in a kind and effective way. Obviously, we don’t always have the right to speak that way into others’ lives. We earn that right through relationship. As we invest in others through service, kindness, and presence, we develop a foundation that allows—and even invites—our words. Today, let the words of your mouth bless the hearts and souls of those you know. #BeTheEdge #LoveJesusBeKind
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” — Ephesians 4:29 NIV
