Proverbs 26:13 NIV

“A sluggard says, “There’s a lion in the road, a fierce lion roaming the streets!”

This is almost the exact same words Solomon used in verse 22:13. The devotion from 4 days ago certainly applies here. However, this gives us a chance to go a bit deeper than we did. He clearly believes work is important and spends significant time devoting a number of the Proverbs to that as well as rebuking the lazy. We spent a good bit of the verse from chapter 22 talking about the lie of the lazy. Here we can recognize that “even when there’s a tinge of truth to an excuse, it’s still a sin not to meet one’s obligations. Excuses meant to deflect shame are countless, when someone could work, but does not want to work.” A friend and I are involved in an old business deal with a person who has not followed through on commitments from many years ago. Every month or two he has a fresh excuse for why they haven’t yet happened but soon will. The excuses individually are very believable. I think most are true. However after seven years we have begun to realize he is just selfish

and greedy and his reasons are no longer reasons. They are purely excuses, lies. You know this person. Probably not the exact one we are dealing with but someone exactly like the one in Solomon’s life. They always have a story l, an excuse, for not completing a task or followthrough on a commitment. The bottom line for us is don’t be that person. Today let your word be true and follow through. #BeTheEdge
