Proverbs 27:17 NIV

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 NIV

As the theme verse for The Edge ministry, I have to work very intentionally not to share about this verse every month. In both the agrarian and military culture of the time, the original hearers and readers of this verse would have been very familiar with the concept of iron sharpening iron. Both for work and war it was necessary for survival to have your iron tools and weapons prepared for use. Sharpening would have been critical. In Solomon’s day, it would require holding iron in both hands and using one to sharpen the other. We, likewise, do not enter the iron sharpening relationship with the understanding that we are already sharp, or that we can sharpen ourselves on our own, but that we need our friends to sharpen us. I have grown and continue to be sharpened by every relationship I encounter through my ministry. We need one another. Today, remember that truth and practice sharpening with a grateful heart. #BeTheEdge
