“Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.”
In studying to share on this passage in commentaries and guides after about a half hour I found myself feeling a heavy heart. There is no good news in this verse. There is tons of great news throughout scripture and even in this chapter. However, the truth of this verse is hard. The image in the original Hebrew is of an ox or other work animal constantly battling with the yoke on its neck and the leading of its master. It is not hard to see how that picture is played out in the life of some today. God has given us guard rails for our lives and much of society seems determined to kick and fight against them at every occasion. And what is “society”? Us. Solomon goes on to let us know that at some point the master must destroy the animal as an example or simply because it is of no value anymore. Broken like a piece of pottery beyond repair. Some good news. There is another way. We recognize the wisdom of God’s way, the futility of battling against “The Masters” hand and we line up with His will, His perfect, flawless will, for our life. Then we have a more peaceful and powerful journey. Jesus spoke of the ease and lightness of His yoke on us. Today quit fighting, submit to His will and enjoy the journey. #BeTheEdge
