“A servant pampered from youth will turn out to be insolent.”
One day I will put together a collection of all the devotions that I’ve started with the sentence, “I know this guy.” This is another one of those. Who hasn’t crossed paths with, worked with, been neighbors with or any number of other scenarios where you’ve interacted with the person described in this verse? In describing what happened to an over indulged servant, Solomon compares the end result of being a lazy, soft living servant to the leaders own child. This does not reflect well on the son. Because of being raised as a privileged child they end up unable to care for themselves, make wise decisions or put in a hard days work. I have often been intrigued by leaders who draw certain lines with even their most trusted employees. At a certain place they create distance from their personal and family life. Solomon encourages that, especially if they treat family with a low expectation of discipline and social and emotional growth. Conversely if one hires well then there is a freedom for their team to also become as close as family. It is all about the character of the individual. I’m a huge fan of hard work. I believe all children should be raised with chores, tasks and expectations to use their God given gifts. This is part of the biblical principle to train up a child. Today hire well and build a family. #BeTheEdge
