Proverbs 29:3 NIV

“A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.”

It would be pretty easy to read this, say “well of course, but I’m certainly not hanging out with prostitutes”, and move onto the next verse. That’s actually ok. However as with so many of Solomon’s verses we can certainly find a more personally applicable understanding of this truth. If you want to see where Jesus spoke of this principal take a look at His telling of the prodigal son story in Luke 15. God offers wisdom. When we respond to that offer we please Him and live a life of impact on a world desperately looking for wise and Godly men and women. The alternative put forth in this passage as well as in Jesus story is how evil people and habits will drain us. They take our money but also our passion for life and impact. It doesn’t have to be prostitution or the other biggies of drugs and alcohol. In reality most of us are not wasting our lives on those obvious sins. Too often we allow things that in moderation, with a proper perspective are ok. When we allow our hobbies, habits and interests to control our lives we are just as guilty of living unwisely as the blatant sinful lifestyles are. Today check the balance of wisdom and habits in your journey and if an adjustment is called for, do it. #BeTheEdge
