Can I just tell you I love this verse. It is hard for me not to hate bullies. As a trained sociologist I understand the sociology of bullies. As a counselor I am aware of what goes into the creation of most bullies. As a minister I know Jesus’ love covers their transgressions. I get all that but there is still something that happens to me at a visceral level when I’m a witness to or made aware of bullying. This verse goes beyond that to anyone, not just the weaker amongst us, who is unable to look out for or protect themselves. They are the hungry, the lonely, the sick and so many other earthly conditions brought in by The Fall. Last night we were playing games at the house with most of our immediate family. As I glanced around at the 3 couples I saw 2 nurses, a teacher working with alternative students and a P.A.. All in helping professions and I was very proud of them and how they live every day to meet the needs of those who can’t do it for themselves. One works for a healthcare ministry that serves the uninsured. Yeah, that’s a whole ‘nother Proverb. It’s not necessary to make it your life’s profession. Here we are told to simply “speak up for them”. Anyone can do that. Find them help, put them in touch, wheel them in the door. To a hurting, lonely, broken person any bit of effort on their behalf helps and speaks volumes about who you serve. Today be that voice for the voiceless and “those without the basic necessities of life”. #BeTheEdge
