Proverbs 1:9 NIV

By September 1, 2022No Comments

“They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”

This is a continuation of verse 8 where Solomon encourages young men to listen and learn from their parents teaching and wisdom. As we start September we will look at the ninth verse in each chapter as we go through this month. Therefore on the 4th we will see the only other place in Proverbs where Solomon uses the phrase garland or ornament of grace. To the Israelite’s mind “no signs or badges of joy or glory were higher in worth than the garland around the head, the gold chain around the neck, worn by kings and the favorites of kings.” The writer is trying to entice the young men and women to find the great rewards that await those who know and practice not only their parents wise teachings but Gods great gifts offered by living in His truth. It is an important distinction that the chain around the neck is a valued prize and not a sign of bondage. Often today the young, maybe not just the young, mistakenly see God’s truth as a way to keep them from truly enjoying freedom and an exciting life. God’s way is filled with joy and freedom. The restraint in God’s wisdom is there to keep us from walking into traffic. It’s for protection. Today live free in Gods great gift of His truth. #BeTheEdge
