Proverbs 3:5 NASB

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 NASB

Peanut butter and jelly, salt and pepper, mac and cheese, Mary Kate and Ashley. If you don’t know that last duo, you are old, and they are irrelevant. That being said, these are all famous pairs. You almost always get one with the other. In the same way, this verse from Proverbs is seldom seen, spoken, or heard without the verse following it. In time, we can potentially miss the power of the first eight words on their own. And they are powerful on their own. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart” may be the most overriding imperative in all of scripture. When I preach a funeral, I always tell the gathered group that if their deceased friend or loved one could tell them one thing at that very moment it would be this: trust God. If you don’t have a relationship with God through Jesus it is time to put your trust entirely in Him. If you do have a relationship with God and you are grieving a loss, it is crucial to trust God. For every need, fear, desire, and hope in our story, the one profound yet simple truth is that we need to trust God and Him alone. Yes, by doing so we can count on Him to “direct our path,” but it’s bigger than that. He is sovereign and firmly in control. We can be tempted to hang onto part of our heart while trusting Him with some or even most of it. That will never work. Today, trust in Him with all your heart and find rest, peace, and power there. #BeTheEdge
