Proverbs 6:4 NIV

“Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids.”

Solomon is sounding a bit like Larry Burkett or in a more current sense Dave Ramsey. This is a continuation of the previous verse. If you owe a debt do whatever you can to get it paid off and get out of it. Many years ago I stood downtown with one of my mentors. A common friend drove by and I casually mentioned what a nice car he was driving. The older friend began to explain to me how some industries almost required their leaders to live a life of crushing debt. Their cash flow needs were huge. They had to give a successful appearance to attract business. He made it clear that although that seemed necessary it was more an unspoken impression. He then commented on how foolish that kind of thinking was. He also shared examples of lives ultimately destroyed by that lifestyle. I once heard someone say their dads nickname was “cash and carry Larry”. Their dad did not use credit. I thought that was amazing. I long ago tried to live by that same standard. In a very real sense our greatest debt is to the one who paid it all to redeem our life. There was a ransom to be paid for our sin and God willing paid it. We don’t all accept His payment. Those of us who have, spend our lives gratefully recognizing the debt we now owe Him and try to live every moment in a worthy manner. Today, if necessary get control of the debt in your life and live as one who was purchased for a price. #BeTheEdge
