“With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk.”
This is another instance where Solomon warns about the adulteress and her ability to cleverly destroy God’s followers. Persuasive words and smooth talk used to be considered compliments for teenage boys. They were mistakenly seen as qualities found in a leader. In this passage, Solomon makes it clear that there is nothing admirable about those characteristics. We are deep into an election season. Because I’m very interested in the world of politics, I observe these qualities daily. I watch people say things in very convincing ways, even though their actions over decades suggest they really believe otherwise. Without picking a side, I can affirm that many in that arena are ‘smooth talkers.’ Smooth talk is often used because the simple truth is either indicting at worst or uninteresting at best. Persuasive words aren’t necessarily bad, but when we are persuaded to do wrong or believe untruths, it becomes dangerous and evil. It is imperative that we bring all we hear before God and His word for verification. Today, listen with discernment. #BeTheEdge
