“Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed.”
I love all the offers God makes throughout scripture. He offers joy, peace, forgiveness, protection, sustenance and on and on and on. If something is important to our survival and happiness He offers it. Incidentally, He alone truly offers it. Here we see Him offering wisdom. That’s what Solomon basically focuses on but the truth behind that truth is we serve a God who does not rescue us and then leave us on a forsaken planet to fend for ourselves until He brings us home. He even offers armor for the battle and refreshment from it as well. No doubt some will say that there are alternatives that offer the same thing God does. Want peace? Take a drink, pop a pill or puff a joint. Having not tried these things but having witnessed hundreds who have I assure you that whatever alternative to God’s peace (that goes beyond understanding) is attempted will wear off at best or steal any bit of peace you have left at worst. Finally what God mostly offers is Himself. Through His son’s sacrifice and His Spirits breathing life into, and taking up residence in, our once dead spirit we not only have access to the divine we are infused with His complete presence. We know Solomon worries about the simple, the innocent, the gullible making poorly considered choices. Here we see God inviting them to eat and learn at His table. Jesus does the same. Today choose to feast with the King. #BeTheEdge
