“Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.”
In biblical history today represents what is known as Great Monday. A number of thing’s occurred on this day in the gospel accounts. One was Jesus turning over the tables and running the money changers out of the temple. That’s a pretty powerful story well worth being studied but that’s not where we are going today. I want to talk a moment about another event, often missed or miss understood, that took place on this day. It was the day after Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem, Palm Sunday. Historically the Jews had their first meal and started their day around 5 am. On this day Jesus and His disciple’s were looking for a bite as they traveled. They came to a beautiful lone fig tree. As they came up to it they found it beautiful in appearance but with any fruit. Zip, none, zero – gorgeous tree but worthless. This tree was a symbol of the ultimate hypocrite. We may have all the trappings of a blessed life. Money and all the things it brings with it. We can be the envy of all who see us yet without God’s righteous fruit in our life we are as worthless as that fig tree. And we await the same fate. To be cursed and left barren for eternity. When the world and our savior inspect our lives they are looking for the internal fruit described in Galatians 5. Those come only as an outgrowth of the life of Christ in our lives. Today take care to allow the fruit of God’s Spirit to flourish in your story. #BeTheEdge
